Chinese TV show rips-off Conan O'Brien

Note: If you are new here, read this then this, first.

It's been long known that China has a habit of ripping off foreign goods, but now it has made its way into television. The Chinese late night show Da Peng copied almost verbatim Conan's opening animation. See for yourself.

Some time later, Da Peng made a response video.

Conan feels bad.

What will they think of rip off next?

Asian Turf War

I recently saw an episode of South Park in which the Chinese guy who owns City Wok is forced to contend with a new sushi place that moves in next door. The whole thing turns into a giant episode spanning fight between them, while most of South Park thinks that China and Japan are the same. Its quite hilarious.

Embedding is not allowed so heres a link. I think its viewable in the US only.

America gets Told. Hard.

Evan Osnos (欧逸文 Ōu yìwén) is the China correspondent for the New Yorker (dream job <3). On Wednesday he had an interview with Stephen Colbert where he reiterated the fact that China is beating us in everything except innovation and human rights.

Say No to Mandarin!

There is a war of words occurring in China. Literally. Since the PRC’s founding, the communist party has been pushing the country to adopt Putonghua (common speech) as a way to promote national unity. Putonghua is the establishment of adopting Beijing Mandarin as a lingua franca for all Chinese. While over 53% of Chinese already speak Mandarin natively, half of 1.3 billion people is still a lot. As a way to push Putonghua, the PRC government has banned using any dialect other than Mandarin in all television broadcasts, with the exception of Cantonese and Wu (Shanghainese) as they are the largest of the minority dialects. Non-Mandarin dialects are also discouraged in the public education system. Students can have their grades penalized for using Cantonese or other dialects.

Recently, the people of Guangzhou took to the streets under rumors that their TV broadcasts would mandate Mandarin. Many feel that the government is trying to replace all other dialects with Mandarin and that it will lead to a loss of identity.

While I agree that a national language is crucial for a strong unified nation, a national dialect is a little more of a hairy issue. In a country as vast and diverse as China, it becomes even more complex. In Imperial China, people rarely ventured far from their home villages (except for the Beijing bureaucrats). This resulted in thousands of dialects in different pockets all over China. It wasn’t unusual for the town over the mountain to speak another dialect. Ever since the Ming Dynasty, the government has tried to implement Beijing Mandarin as a national dialect. From then to the present day, it has been mostly successful. 53% of China speaks some accent of Mandarin but it took over 700 years. In the southeast of China, the mountainous terrain had isolated most communities from these national language efforts until modern times. As a result, lands from Shanghai to Guangxi still hold on to these pocket dialects, and they have firmly resisted Putonghua.

TVB ain't all bad

TVB isn't all mindless and vacous though!

For instance um.....

Bao Zheng

He serves as an excellent example to much of the PRC today with its uber corruption not to mention that of HK's corruption in fact this is probably why they no longer show repeats of shows based around him.*

Granted all there seems to be are remakes of Legend of the Condor Heroes Wong Fei Hong and Huo Yuanjia.

Ok so I maybe biased! As I sometimes do work for TVB UK (jn what capacity is a well kept secret!)

21 August 2010

Miss HK2010.

And TVB wonders why the hell people are pirating their TV channels overseas instead of paying £40 a month for it. As per usual money and influence are the biggest factors in HK society whatever the hell happened to meritocracy or sheer shallowness? Remember Miss HK is a beauty pagent therefore the stuff you see on Miss World where they have to care about the environment and stuff does NOT apply!.

I sometimes watch it (TVB) on my laptop to one side. Not that I watch TVB too often since the news is 24 hours out of date and they only care about share prices and nowt else. I mean the other day a guy was stabbed in TST. The news gave it about 20 seconds.... heh those expats are all flocking over to Kowloon side these days since the shit hole LKF is closed for a month. (TCG famously hates LKF in HK)

Quite normally TCG would bang every miss HK all the way back to 1985 1988 like a barn door in a gale.... scrub 1993 though. But seriously there does look like there is something wrong with Toby Chan.... actually maybe stick in 1987 as well.

Because as my old buddy once said.
"When you're poking the fire place, you ain't looking at the mantel piece"

What TCG is a shallower than a puddle? Yeah and so if Cecilia Cheung presented herself on a plate... no wait this doesn't work, as Cecilia Cheung has a massive bush which would make it look like Osama Bin Laden was going down on you. (actually Cecilia doesn't appear to be as nice as she used to be) or if you went down on her you wouldn't need to floss your teeth.

I couldn't put my finger on it.

Then I figured it out, a plastic Cherrie Blair smile. Look at the picture.

Her smile is terrifically forced and un-natural. Much like (sober) men can spot cross dressers instantly with uber height, shoulder to hip ratio and big hands. (Though Thailand can be tricky TCG's accountant went to Thailand once.... hold on an accountant has an accountant? Yeah.....) People can spot fake smiles pretty easily.

In the UK we absolutely hate Tony Blair,( ex UK Prime minister) he is a murdering lying cunt... the thing is we always go easy on him because he is in purgatory. I mean FFS he is slipping Cherrie Blair one every now and again.

DANGER! TCG IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SCREEN OR KEYBOARD DAMAGE DUE TO YOU BEING SICK Cherie Blair picture here and here DANGER! TCG IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SCREEN OR KEYBOARD DAMAGE DUE TO YOU BEING SICK

Cherrie Blair is probably in room101 of most sane men. The CIA should use her as an interrogator..... because I don't want my readers to be permanently scarred I shall omit what she could do to get you to confess.

For those of you who don't know who Cherrie Blair happens to be, Cherrie Blair is or was the 2nd
most hated person in the UK. A newspaper (I forget which) commissioned a study about most hated people in the UK who would you deport.

#1 was Abu Hamza, The sun calls him captain hook, he is currently in Belmarsh Prison and the UK government hopes we'll forget who he is.

#2 was Cherrie Blair, because she is a money grabbing witch

Share the hate

邵逸夫! What look at what has happened to TVB!

Where the hell was I oh yeah, people have complained it was a fix! all over the interwebs.

I mean look at Miss Korea 2010 or miss Japan 2010...... they aren't fantastic but at least they don't have the Cherie Blair smile...

Evil people in Chinese dramas

I get asked this question now and again.... (note not to be taken too seriously)

And i'm going to kill the question by answering you all...

Has anybody read the book 1984 by Orwell? It's a good book. Julia works in the stories department where they use wheels which are turned round to make plots and characters for stories which are fed to the masses.... bit like Eastenders and Coronation street to be honest

Or those funky star trek plot generators here here and here

Chinese TV stations are the same, especially TVB, who are fucking cunts who I have beef with because they called me a fucking cunt...though it came out wrong and instead was you farking coont!

The premise of most Chinese dramas revolves around these central themes:

Revenge / Jealousy

Yup that's it.... revenge is easy to spot from badly dubbed 1970s Kung fu (wushu) movies

Blah blah you killed my [insert family member here] [friend] You must will now die!

I mean pretty much all of Chow Yun Fat's movies are modern variations of revenge but with guns.

7 Swords for instance

Is also about revenge

Crouching tiger hidden dragon

Same same about revenge, note mainland Chinese people think Zhiyang Zhi is ugly. But hey I'd tap dat!

Let me think of some big films off my head...

Jet Li's Hero- revenge
Fearless - revenge

So you got that back there?

Ok then you get Jealousy which covers everything else in the Chinese media universe.

You get period costume dramas from TVB all the time too, where people dress up and pretend to be in the royal court. Everything here is about jealousy..... usually the evil witch queen who is new or was previously of a high position wants her son to become emperor which is why she is so evil and nasty. This encompasses nearly the entire genre.

無頭東宮 is one of my favorites, or used to be namely because I watched it as a young man and wanted to tap Anne Heung badly...TCG has something about Miss Hong Kong winners and would tap a good 80% of them. Or bang them like a barn door in a gale.

(theme music only)

Now you get complicated ones, a really complicated script will combine BOTH jealousy AND revenge. A more complicated film may have revenge and jealousy which was what 無頭東宮 (Love is beautiful) is all about.

Therefore if you watch a Chinese film and don't quite understand, if you narrow the concepts down to either Jealousy or revenge you'll see how thin the plot is.

For instance 少年天子, somebody asked me the other day why is the ex-empresses such a fucking psycho bitch? Jealousy..... and it all makes sense...

Kind of....
